Dr Stephanie Waller Receives Zonta Science Award 2026

The Zonta Club of Wellington is proud to announce Dr Stephanie Waller as the recipient of the 2026 Zonta Science Award, recognising her outstanding contributions to the study of viruses in New Zealand wildlife and her commitment to advancing women in science.

Dr Waller, a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Otago, was selected for her research into the diversity, evolution, and transmission of viruses in wildlife, particularly birds and other ecologically important species in Aotearoa New Zealand. Her work helps improve understanding of emerging infectious diseases, biosecurity risks, biodiversity conservation, and public health.

The judging panel was impressed by Dr Waller’s scientific achievements, growing international reputation, and dedication to science communication, mentorship, and supporting the next generation of women in STEM.


“I am deeply honoured to receive the Zonta Science Award,” said Dr Waller. “This recognition highlights the importance of understanding wildlife viruses and their role in the health of both ecosystems and communities. The award will enable me to attend international conferences and professional development opportunities, strengthening collaborations and bringing new knowledge back to New Zealand.”

The award includes a $20,000 grant to support research and career development, along with a bespoke commemorative medal, certificate, and national recognition at an award ceremony in Wellington.

Amanda Maxwell, President of the Zonta Club of Wellington, said Dr Waller's work demonstrates the value of investing in scientific research and emerging scientific leaders.

“Dr Waller is conducting research with real-world relevance to New Zealand’s wildlife, biosecurity, and public health. She is also an inspiring role model for young women considering careers in science, and we are delighted to support the next stage of her career.”



The Zonta Science Award is presented biennially and recognises excellence and achievement by women in science. Established in 1990, the award supports outstanding women scientists at critical stages of their careers and encourages greater participation and visibility of women in STEM fields.

The Christine Reardon Guest Speaker at the award reception was Di Tracey, Scientist Emerita in Deep Sea Fisheries and Ecology at Earth Sciences Aotearoa New Zealand. Di has a long record of advocating for and mentoring women in science. In her engaging speech, she talked of the challenges and rewards in her work in the deep seas with amusing anecdotes on life aboard the Tangaroa. Di concluded with wise words on recommendations for the future of women in Science.
