#NZWomensDebate2025 Parity in Politics

With local elections fast approaching this October 2025, what is being done to achieve a #GenderEqualNZ within our political systems?

So how do we encourage more women to enter politics, what needs to be done to keep them there?

The Wellington Branch of the National Council of Women New Zealand, Zonta Club of Wellington and Graduate Women Wellington, are hosting the Annual Women’s Debate 2025 to discuss this question.

Date: Wednesday 30 July 2025

Time: 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM (door will be open by 5.30 pm for networking)

Venue: Room 105, Rutherford House, Victoria University of Wellington, Pipitea Campus

Online via Zoom

Cost: Free to attend

This year’s theme — Parity in Politics - focuses on the lived experiences of women across the political spectrum, the gendered obstacles they’ve faced, and the ongoing work to dismantle barriers to leadership.

We’re honoured to be hosted by Susie Ferguson, award-winning RNZ journalist and broadcaster, and joined by an incredible panel:

  • Susan Freeman-Greene, Chief Executive, Local Government New Zealand

  • Tory Whanau, Mayor of Wellington City

  • Afnan Al-Rubayee, senior public servant and community leader

  • Rebecca Matthews, Wellington City Councillor

Expect thoughtful insights, candid stories, and calls to action for building a more inclusive and #GenderEqualNZ.

Light refreshments will be served.

Tickets are limited due to venue capacity. Bring a friend — or join us online!

The Zoom webinar link will be included in the email confirmation upon registration.
